a north american road trip the truck is dead july 23rd, 2010 whilst trying to sort out the paperwork to sell my truck the other day the clutch seized on my broken ac compressor and broke the fan belt. cost to rectify the problem $1500, cost to register the truck in california $600, value of truck $500 – $2000. i’ve left it in a dodgy neighbourhood with the key in it. even without selling the truck it’s cost me about $1500 less than hiring a car. i visited the queen mary a couple of days ago and hired a car yesterday to drive down to san diego for a couple of days. i shall drive back up to los angeles on monday to fly back to the ship. hiring a car in california is not as easy as you’d hope. enterprise is by far the cheapest hire car company, so i booked a dodge charger from them, went to pick it up only to discover that they will not accept debit cards, cheques or even real money. enterprise will only accept credit cards and i don’t have one, so i’ve ended up paying almost twice as much money for a toyota yaris. found some carriers today, uss midway and i think probably the nimitz and the john c stenis. i had a look round the midway, it’s been turned into a very good museum with all the well known jets ranged on the deck. tomorrow i shall visit the world famous san diego zoo and probably do sea world on sunday. posted in uncategorized | no comments » mission complete july 18th, 2010 many said i wouldn’t make it. they said that the car would break down, that i would be locked up or shot but i’m here in los angeles with a room 50 meters from venice beach and spectacular views over the pacific ocean. i’ve crossed 14 us states and 4 canadian provinces and i’ve driven 4,400miles in a little over 70 hours on the road. now i’ve just got to sell my truck. i’ve met 7 english people on my trip, 5 from pompey and a fellow southampton ship scientist. weather here is fantastic, much cooler than vegas, don’t even need ac opening windows are perfectly adequate. posted in uncategorized | 2 comments » albuquerque – las vegas july 16th, 2010 left albuquerque a couple of days ago and headed up to monument valley, the scenery was spectacular and it just kept getting better as i heaed up towards page for the night. had dinner in utah over looking lake powell. left page early in the morning and heaed down to the grand canyon, took lots of photos and then set out for the hoover dam. on the way i spotted a lockhead constellation by the side of the road, obviously i had to stop and have a closer look. it turned out to be the aircraft used by gen. mac arthur during the korean war and was part of a larger collection of interesting aeroplanes. crossed the hoover dam just as the sun was setting and found the hostel in las vegas, it is ideally located at the top end of the strip, got three nights here, one to recover from all the driving, one to enjoy all that vegas has to offer and the last to recover prior to the final leg of my journey to the west coast. i’ve just put the truck on e-bay, only another 400 miles to go. posted in uncategorized | no comments » okc – albuquerque july 13th, 2010 i think i’ve got the spelling right now. left oklahoma this morning and crossed into texas. i found an excellent restraunt in amarillo called “the big texan steak house”, i only had a small 16oz steak but it was delicious. if you order the 72oz and manage to eat it in under an hour it’s free, i think tiny and paul might like this place. i left amarillo about 1500, about 1530 i started to hear a disturbing rattle and smell a faint whiff of burning rubber. the culprit turned out to be the ac compressor, it’s not completely seized but is sticking intermittently. fortunately i diagnosed the problem before it destroyed the auxiliary drive belt, new compressor will cost about $250 but i forgot to bring a vacuum pump or bottle of r134a so i guess it’s going to a garage first thing in the morning. at least the windows still work, but the outside air is very warm in albuquerque. on the plus side i’m still a day ahead of schedule, i have made it to albuquerque and once i’ve got the compressor replaced i still expect the truck to have cost me less than a hire car. i’ve now done 3100 miles over 10 states and about 50hrs on the road so it’s not doing too badly for a 13 year thoroughly abused little truck. i still plan on making it to monument valley tomorrow. posted in uncategorized | 1 comment » chicago – oklahoma city july 13th, 2010 i visited the museums in chicago, then went to find a traditional chicago style pizza. the best place for pizza near the hostel happened to be in a pub. the pizza was very big, i gather most people don’t actually finish a whole pizza on their own and the pub did supply a box to take what i couldn’t manage home with me, however, i’m not a big fan of cold pizza so i stayed in the pub and drank beer ’til it was gone. it took quite a few beers. whilst i was eating my pizza some big robots were having a fight on adams st, it was carnage – burnt out cars, collapsing buildings, the lot. left chicago yesterday morning, stopped by springfield, il for a spot of lunch and to visit lincoln’s tomb and then on to st louis, almost. iwas just getting into town, about 10 miles from the hotel when all the electrics died. my alternator had developed a fault and shorted out the battery. fortunately it chose to die next to a garage, where i managed to get new alternator and battery this morning. it delayed my start this morning by about four hours (well 3 if i’m honest, i wouldn’t have got up so early if i didn’t need to fix the truck) but i’ve made it to oklahoma city. drove just over 500 miles today, taking the total to 2,550 and i’ve now crossed 8 states posted in it to oklahoma city, now covered 2,550 miles across 8 states and 4 canadian provinces. tomorrow i shall follow the road to amarillo and then on to albequerqe. thursday i might take the truck off road for a bit around arizona. posted in uncategorized | 1 comment » henry ford museum july 9th, 2010 left canada yesterday, visited the henry ford museum in detroit on route to chicago. it may be the best museum i’ve ever visited, i wish i’d had another day but there are many more museums to visit in chicago where the worlds most complete tyrannosaurus rex is on display and a german u-boat. got the air conditioning fixed on my truck today and stopped the tail gate rattling, now all set to take on route 66. posted in uncategorized | no comments » tower, waterfalls, destroyer, beer july 7th, 2010 hello. busy couple of days. yesterday i went up the cn tower, the tallest finished building in the world. the highest viewing platform is 1500′ above the ground and the main viewing deck has a glass floor. after the tower i finally managed a tour of the steam whistle brewery, the previous day there was a power cut affecting the entire city and so i was only able to drink the free beer. today i started off very early to visit the niagara falls and have a trip on the famous maid of the mist. it was an awe inspiring sight, you cannot imagine the scale of the falls from the pictures you see on the television. after that, i found a ww2 tribal class destroyer, hmcs aida. she is the most decorated ship in the royal canadian navy and the only tribal left. after the sight seeing it was off on the short drive to windsor, on, just across the river from detroit city for my last night in canada. so tomorrow’s plan – i will cross the river back into the usa, visit the henry ford museum and then on to chicago where i will get my air conditioning fixed before the long trek down r66 to las vegas and los angeles. i’m now one day ahead of my planned schedule and have covered 1,200 miles in my truck, about one third of the way to la and crossed 3 us states and 4 canadia
